Billets casting
"HOT TOP"
We use modern technology for billets production, which assures the most favourable metalographic structures and low hydrogen content. These two characteristics are necessary for successful extrusion.

Billets casting is a semi-continuous process with hot top - gas slip equipment.

The most important element of the casting furnace is the casting table with the moulds for production of different billet diameters. The casting table moves to the bottom of the 8 m casting pit during the casting process. Billets coming from the mould are cooled with a strong jet of cooling water.

Movement of the 50 tones weight is executed with the help of a hydraulic cylinder. For precise vertical conduction and the assurance of equal casting speed, the processing computer oversees the procedure.

After the casting process is finished, we take 7.5 m long billets from the casting pit with a crane, which puts the billets on the homogenising table.

In the casting launder we add grain refiner (AlTiB wire) to reduce internal cracks and get fine-grained structure, which improves the extrudability.

This system of moulds reduces metal level and improves the billet quality. The design of the mould reduces the time between primary and secondary coolings. To reduce the friction between the mould wall and the billet, the system uses oil for lubrication. The mould has a graphite ring which acts as the mould wall. The gas from porous graphite keeps bearing between the metal meniscus and the mould wall. This reduces the effect of the primary cooling, which will give a further reduction of the inverse segregation zone and better surface. For the gas we use argon and oxygen.
